What You’ll Need

  • A clear plastic bottle with smooth sides
  • Food coloring
  • Vegetable oil
  • Fizzing tablets (Alka Seltzer)
  • Water

The Instructions

To begin with, you’ll need to ensure your bottle is clean and dry. Next, fill it quarter way with water.

Add vegetable oil to the water until the bottle is almost full. Use a funnel to do this so that the oil does not spill on the sides of the bottle.

Wait for some minutes as the oil and water separate into two distinct layers.

Next, add into the bottle, food coloring, and watch as the color sinks through the vegetable oil layer.

Please observe if the food coloring mixes with water immediately, or it floats in between the two layers for a few minutes.

Once the food coloring is properly mixed with the water, break your fizzing tablet in two and drop half of it into the bottle.

Get ready for the bubbly blobs!

For the second half of your fizzing tablet, turn off the lights, and use a flashlight to observe the lava lamp.

Oil floats on top of the water because water has a higher density than oil. Food coloring is also denser than oil, so it sinks all the way to the water layer. The food coloring does not float on the water layer but mixes with it immediately because these two have the same density.

When the fizzing tablet dissolves, it releases carbon (IV) oxide gas. Since this gas is lighter than water, it floats to the top of the oil layer. As the bubbles move upwards, they bring some water with them.

When the air escapes, the colored water that came along begins to sink back because water is denser than oil. This happens over and over again until the fizzing tablet is completely dissolved.

  • Food coloring
  • 300ml of white vinegar
  • 5ml of dish soap
  • 75ml of cold water
  • An empty bottle of soda (2 Liters)
  • Backing soda slurry (a mixture of baking soda and water)

The Instructions

The first thing you need to do is carry everything you need and go outside. This is an explosive experiment, and it is best if you do it outside.

Mix the water, white vinegar, and dish soap in the empty, 2-liter bottle.

Next, add two drops of the food coloring to the mixture and ensure everything is properly mixed.

Use a spoon to properly mix the baking soda slurry so that nothing is settled at the bottom of the cup.

Are you ready for the volcano? Quickly add the baking powder slurry to the mixture in the bottle and step back!

  • Shaving cream
  • Food coloring

  • Water

The Instructions

Fill the glass halfway through with water.

Spray shaving cream on top of the water until the glass is three-quarter full

Use the spoon to spread the shaving cream over the water evenly. Make sure that the top surface of the shaving cream is flat.

Add ten drops of food coloring to a separate container, half-filled with water.

With a spoon, slowly add the food coloring mixture to the top of the shaving cream until the shaving cream gets heavy.

Now watch it storm!
