Each chamber was filled with a different type of bedding material: Chamber #1 had leaves, #2 had cardboard, and #3 had paper. Then in went the red wiggler composting worms. Periodically water and grit (pulverized eggshell) were added. Also, as needed, additional material was loaded in when the levels dropped low.
For those who want to know about the ice, it was used to help control the temperature. When it becomes too low the worms slow down (and die), and if it gets too hot, they could die.
